Turbinegeneration is an international schools project connected to The Unilever Series, and The Unilever Series is the annual commission that invites an artist to make a work of art specifically for Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. These art works have included the Doris Salcedo’s - Shibboleth, Rachel Whiteread’s - Embankment and the most recent piece by Ai Weiwei – Sunflower Seeds.
The turbinegeneration project helps schools form partnerships with other schools from around the world, helping them pair up and work together to create artwork which is inspired by the Unilever Series. The project also helps schools work with local galleries and artists to facilitate the project.
This led to Tate wanting to develop a fully interactive community to help support the collaboration and partnerships between schools, enabling them to share files and ideas via the website – allowing an online community to be built around the project. The website predicts supporting 500 schools, 100 gallery partnerships and 250 schools partnerships from 30 different countries by 2013.
