Tate Twitter Feed

A social network which helps schools form partnerships with other schools from around the world, allowing them to work together to create artwork which is inspired by the Unilever Series.

Turbinegeneration is an international schools project connected to The Unilever Series, and The Unilever Series is the annual commission that invites an artist to make a work of art specifically for Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. These art works have included the Doris Salcedo’s - Shibboleth, Rachel Whiteread’s - Embankment and the most recent piece by Ai Weiwei – Sunflower Seeds.

The turbinegeneration project helps schools form partnerships with other schools from around the world, helping them pair up and work together to create artwork which is inspired by the Unilever Series. The project also helps schools work with local galleries and artists to facilitate the project.

This led to Tate wanting to develop a fully interactive community to help support the collaboration and partnerships between schools, enabling them to share files and ideas via the website – allowing an online community to be built around the project. The website predicts supporting 500 schools, 100 gallery partnerships and 250 schools partnerships from 30 different countries by 2013.

Key features include:

Artist Profile

Teachers and students have personalised profiles where they can upload images and film within the safe, moderated environment.

Throughout the profile, each user is able to keep track of their content which includes information on the user, recent comments and blogs posts they have written. Also, the artists is able to add useful information to promote their work – such as pictures, related sites and contact details.

Online Gallery

The Online Gallery allows Tate to create an editorially-managed showcase of the best user content on the site. Each showcase gallery can contain nine pieces of content along with a descriptive title and description. Past galleries can still be viewed using a View block archive.

To start adding content, Tate managers can browse content using a views page with exposed filters. User content is assigned to galleries using an exclusive taxonomy.

Teacher Partnerships

The partnership system on the turbinegeneration site allows two schools to partner with each other and collaborate on their content. Content created by the two users is shown on their profile pages, unless certain privacy settings have been enabled.

It was a functionality aimed at advancing collaboration between users, allowing them to work on project simultaneously.

Project Pack

Project packs is a downloadable resource which offers different approaches into video, photography, sound and installation. They act as starting point for schools who are contributing or creating a project, they include suggestions, tutorials and live links to the Tate website.

They can simply be downloaded as a PDF from the project packs page and they help schools. The project pack is designed to be used as an interactive resource with live links to the Tate website; however, it can also be printed for use in the classroom.
